Yang’s work explores the tension between emotion, memory, and materiality through textiles, installations, video, and performance. Central to her practice is the concept of the “apotropaic,” which transcendsmits ancient symbolism to become a dynamic mechanism of protection, transformation, and emotional resonance. By engaging with textures and forms, Yang creates invisible shields against the erosion of time, offering sanctuaries for unspoken emotions.
In Insoles from Mom, her mother’s handmade insoles act as fossils of time, preserving labor and emotion while safeguarding memory. Similarly, in A Piece of Grandma Green, symbolic braids and textiles weave female identity and cultural memory into universal human narratives. These materials not only protect but also generate dynamic emotional connections.

Yang’s work transforms the apotropaic into a response to vulnerability and uncertainty, forging new pathways through material and narrative. Through the interplay of fibers, textures, and forms, she uses material as a substitute for the language of time, evoking a primal resonance with human emotion.
Both a narration of memory and an inquiry into existence, Yang’s work turns art into an apotropaic “sensory ritual,” resisting time’s erosion while building emotional structures of protection. Her practice invites audiences to rediscover hidden emotions and reimagine memory in a contemporary context.
